Gloss Problems on Cosmetic Plastic Parts: Supplier Review Questions
Gloss disputes are where cosmetic programs stall. The part can be dimensionally perfect while the surface reads shinier in some zones and duller in others, or differs from the last lot. “Too dull” stays an opinion until it is a measured specification. Gloss problems are a standards failure as much as a molding defect.
Identifying Gloss Variation Patterns
Gloss is the most visible property of a cosmetic part, and variation shows. Typical observations: uneven sheen on one face, dull or hazy patches in consistent locations (often near the gate, over thick sections, or at end of fill), glossy streaks on a matte texture, or gloss banding.
These patterns are stability signals. Surface gloss responds to mold temperature, fill behavior, and tool surface condition. Drifting gloss usually means a drifting process or deteriorating texture.
Mold temperature distribution: Gloss tracks tool surface temperature. Uneven cooling circuits can paint warm and cool zones onto the part as gloss differences.
Fill and flow effects: Dull zones at end-of-fill or over flow marks often show how the front cooled as it traveled. Gloss banding is flow history made visible.
Tool surface condition: Gradual gloss change over time usually means texture wear, polish degradation, or residue. That is tool maintenance, not a process dial.
Material and colorant: Changes in material lot, regrind ratio, or colorant carrier can shift baseline appearance between runs.
Texture vs. gloss interplay: On textured parts, localized shear or excess temperature can “iron” texture during fill, which reads as glossy patches on an otherwise matte surface.
Questions to Ask the Supplier at T1
Determine scope: within a single shot, between cavities, or between runs. Each scope points to a different cause. Within-shot suggests cooling or flow. Cavity-to-cavity points to tooling. Lot-to-lot points to material or process drift.
Ask for mold-temperature setpoints mapped to the affected zones. Ask whether material lot, regrind ratio, or colorant changed.
Ask how texture and polish condition are verified, and when they were last checked.
Establishing the Standard
Do not approve a tool on an ambiguous gloss situation. Require side-by-side samples from the varying lots under agreed lighting. If the program warrants it, demand gloss-meter readings at specified points and angles.
Establish a jointly approved reference (“golden”) sample retained by buyer and molder. That physical sample anchors later production disputes.
Sourcing and RFQ Strategy
In the RFQ, specify surface finish to a recognized standard (for example SPI or VDI) per face, and name gloss-critical faces. State that a reference sample will be jointly approved at T1 and will govern production acceptance. Ask bidders how they control gloss lot-to-lot. The answer shows process discipline.
