Black Specks in Injection Molded Parts: Buyer-Side Risk Checklist

Black specks are small but informative. Depending on the application and agreed cosmetic or purity standard, they may be unacceptable and may justify reviewing material handling, machine condition, hot-runner condition, changeover, and housekeeping. A recurring pattern is a stronger supplier-control signal than a single unexplained event. This page is the buyer-side review aid.

What Buyers Usually See

Tiny dark or black particles embedded in the part surface or visible inside transparent parts; specks concentrated near the gate or scattered randomly; an occasional speck per hundred parts or a steady rate per shot; sometimes accompanied by brown streaks or off color.

Why This Matters Before Approval

Specks have several possible origins that should be investigated with the supplier. Degradation: carbonized resin from stagnant or high-residence-time areas in the melt path, often worse after the machine sits hot. Contamination: foreign material in the path, previous resin not fully purged, contaminated regrind, dust in handling, or wear debris. These patterns usually lead to an equipment, material-path, or handling review, but the source should be verified before responsibility or corrective action is assigned.

Possible Technical Patterns to Verify

  • Carbonized buildup. Specks that worsen after idle periods or appear with brown streaks may indicate degraded material in barrel dead spots, nozzle, or hot-runner zones.
  • Incomplete changeover. Specks following a material/color change can point to insufficient purging—previous resin charring in the path.
  • Regrind and handling contamination. Dirty granulator, open containers, or contaminated conveying can seed specks; regrind ratio records matter (see regrind and recycled content). When incompatible materials cross-contaminate rather than just adding specks, the result can be delamination instead.
  • Wear debris. A worn screw, barrel, or check ring can shed dark particles—overlaps with the machine-maintenance regime.
  • Hot-runner residence. Parts from hot-runner tools may show specks tied to manifold/drop dead spots—an equipment-specific check.

Questions to Ask the Injection Molder

  • What’s the speck rate (per shot or per hundred parts), and is it stable, improving, or episodic?
  • When did it start—after a material change, color change, maintenance event, or idle weekend?
  • What’s your purging procedure on changeover, and what was run before my material?
  • When were the screw/barrel and (if applicable) hot-runner last inspected or cleaned?
  • What regrind ratio is in my parts, and how is regrind protected from contamination?

Documents or Evidence to Request

  • Affected samples with the speck rate quantified (a count, not “occasional”).
  • Machine maintenance log extract for the press involved (screw/barrel inspection dates).
  • Purging/changeover procedure summary and material run history before your lot.
  • A corrective plan with a measurable target (speck rate) and a re-check date.

When to Delay Mold or Production Approval

  • Cosmetic, clear, regulated, or purity-sensitive parts exceeding the agreed acceptance criteria, or showing a persistent speck rate with no corrective plan.
  • The supplier treats specks as normal background rather than a quantified, improvable rate.
  • Specks coincide with off color or brown streaks—possible broader degradation, see discoloration.
  • The root machine or hot-runner inspection is deferred “until the next maintenance window” while shipping continues.

What to Include in the Next RFQ

  • For appearance- or purity-critical parts, state a speck acceptance rate explicitly in your inspection standard (zone-based if appropriate).
  • Ask bidders about changeover purging and regrind protection practices—answers reveal housekeeping maturity.
  • For clear parts, say so prominently: speck sensitivity changes how a shop schedules your job after dark colors.

  • Speck rate quantified and trended, not described
  • Onset correlated with changeover/idle/maintenance events
  • Purging practice and prior-material history reviewed
  • Machine/hot-runner inspection status confirmed
  • Regrind ratio and protection documented
