Color Shift and Discoloration: Mold Trial Review for Buyers
Color problems split into two very different conversations, and buyers need to know which one they’re in. A part that’s consistently the wrong shade is a standards-and-formulation discussion. A part with yellowed zones, brown streaks, or color that drifts shot-to-shot may be showing heat damage to the material—and that second kind isn’t cosmetic, because degraded polymer is weaker polymer. This page is the buyer-side review aid for telling them apart and acting on each.
What Buyers Usually See
Yellow or brownish tint—overall or in streaks; dark streaks trailing from the gate; color that doesn’t match the approved chip or the previous lot; uneven color or pearlescent streaking on the surface; color differing cavity-to-cavity or drifting during a run.
Why This Matters Before Approval
The cosmetic half matters for the obvious reasons—assemblies that don’t match, brands that look off. The degradation half matters more: yellowing and burn-tinted streaks can indicate the resin is being overheated or over-resided in the barrel, which can come with embrittlement you can’t see (see brittle parts). Color is also the canary for black specks—they often share causes. Approving “slightly off color” without classifying it risks approving damaged material.
Possible Technical Patterns to Verify
- Thermal degradation. Yellow/brown tinting or burnt-looking streaks may indicate melt temperature too high or residence time too long for this resin—worth verifying against the supplier processing guide.
- Moisture-related streaking. Silvery or off-color streaks can overlap with splay from under-dried material.
- Colorant mixing. Uneven color or marbling may point to masterbatch ratio, mixing, or carrier compatibility rather than damage. For a consistently wrong base shade—as opposed to a degradation streak—the conversation is one of standards and approval; see color matching.
- Regrind and contamination. Off-shade lots can follow regrind ratio changes or a contaminated material path (see regrind and recycled content).
- Standards drift. If every part matches each other but not your expectation, the issue may be that no controlled color standard exists for this program.
Questions to Ask the Injection Molder
- Is the color deviation uniform across the part and the run, or localized/drifting? (Uniform → formulation/standard; drifting/streaked → process/material condition.)
- What melt temperatures and residence time is this part seeing—and how does that compare to the resin maker’s guidance?
- What is the colorant (pre-colored resin vs masterbatch), the ratio, and has any of it changed?
- What regrind percentage is in these parts?
- Do we have an agreed color standard (physical chip or instrumented values), and under what light source is it judged?
Documents or Evidence to Request
- Labeled samples from the lots in question plus the approved color reference.
- Process record: melt temps, cycle, drying, regrind ratio, colorant lot.
- If degradation is suspected: any melt-flow or simple mechanical comparison between affected and good lots.
- Color measurement data (instrumented ΔE against the standard) where the program justifies it.
When to Delay Mold or Production Approval
- Streaked or yellowed parts with degradation unruled-out—color plus possible embrittlement is a stop, not a concession.
- No controlled color standard exists and parts must match other components.
- Color varies within a run and the supplier can’t yet say why.
- The proposed remedy is re-coloring around an uncontrolled process rather than stabilizing it.
What to Include in the Next RFQ
- Define the color standard up front: reference chips, judging light source, and (if needed) instrumented tolerance.
- State adjacent-part matching requirements so bidders quote color control, not just color.
- Ask how the shop controls residence time and temperature for color-critical and heat-sensitive resins.
Buyer-Side Checklist
- Deviation classified: uniform vs streaked/drifting
- Degradation possibility addressed in writing
- Colorant system and regrind ratio documented
- Controlled color standard agreed (chip/instrument + light source)
- Cross-cavity and lot-to-lot consistency reviewed
- Acceptance standard updated
